4 Common Fears Seniors Have When Starting Online and How to Overcome Them

Click to hear audio version:

The idea of building an online business can be daunting to many seniors. Many of them may not be net-savvy or they may have never had their own business. It may all ‘seem’ too complex and overwhelming.

The key word here is “seem”, it only seems that way. Everything is difficult before it becomes easy. The most important step is to discard your limiting beliefs and open your mind up to the possibility that you’ll be able to do it all with relative ease.

Learning never exhausts the mind. If you’re willing to learn, you will succeed online. Let’s looks at a few common fears that seniors have about online marketing.

1. I’m Too Old to Learn This!

You’re never too old. Online marketing is not the Olympics. You do not need to be young and strong to jump hurdles. All hurdles that you must overcome are in your own mind.

There’s a common misconception among seniors that the internet and technology are for the “young’uns”  and it’s all beyond them now that they’re old as dirt. This is again a self-limiting belief.

Just getting online and spending an hour a day for a month surfing and looking through the different social media sites, etc. will give you a good understanding of how it all works.

2. I’m Not Good with Tech Stuff!

This is another fear that has no grounds. You can definitely get proficient with the tech stuff if you learned how to do it. There are countless websites and videos with instructions to guide you every step of the way.

There are seniors who have taught themselves how to build a business online just by searching for help on Google and YouTube. It’s just a matter of looking, learning and applying.

You can get net-savvy and learn how to do the tech stuff if you put in the effort.

3. I Don’t Have a ‘Business Bone’ in My Body!

You do not need to be born with business acumen to succeed online. All you have to do is model yourself on others who are succeeding online. Watch what they are doing and replicate their actions and effort.

Put your own spin on things and exercise your creativity. As a senior, you’ll have experience and your own take on things. Go ahead and be yourself. Observe the fundamentals, and at the same time allow yourself to be different.

4. What if I Fail?

Don’t even worry about this fear. You’re going to fail and that is a good thing!

Failure is not the opposite of success. It’s a part of success. For you to succeed online, you must fail. This is inevitable. So, you should expect it and not fear it.

Baseball players have more strikeouts than hits. Movie studios that have been in business for decades still can’t predict if a movie will be a blockbuster or a flop.

That’s just the way it is. You must be willing to take failure in your stride and keep moving forward till you succeed.

Initially, when you’re learning how it all works, you will make mistakes. This is par for the course. Do NOT throw in the towel. Keep persevering and learn from your mistakes until you see success.

By now, you’ll realize that most of these fears are unfounded and even if you think they’re justified, all you need to do is get started. Action is the antidote to fear.

Once you’ve overcome inertia and are moving forward, you’ll dispel your fears and succeed online. Act today and reap the rewards in the future.
