20 Reasons Generation X Feels Overlooked and Underappreciated

Sandwiched between Baby Boomers and Millennials, Generation X encompasses anyone born between the early 1960s and late 1970s. Often nicknamed “the forgotten generation,” this demographic is by no means unimportant. As the first group to be brought up with working mothers, the Internet, and more liberal principles, Gen Xers have contributed a lot to our society and have an array of unique personalities as a result. Here are 20 underappreciated traits often shared by Gen Xers.

With both divorce rates and dual-income households on the rise, Gen X kids were no strangers to creativity and DIY projects. Having busy parents meant they were often encouraged to help around the house and adopt a hands-on approach. As such, they developed practical skills to carry them through later life, whether it’s fixing a leaky sink or plunging a toilet.

While they grew up in a time of media explosion, Gen Xers know where to draw the line regarding time spent with technology. They often can’t understand why anyone would want to be an influencer and be accountable to social media and their smartphones for financial gain.

Each generation has its musical groove, and for Generation X, this is the best of the 90’s grunge. Bands such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and The Red Hot Chilli Peppers were finding their stride and influencing culture across the states. As a result, grunge and alternative rock have a special place in the hearts of most Gen Xers.

Such rapid technological and cultural advances have meant life has changed a lot for the Gen X group. This has made them more nostalgic than other generations, particularly for outdated technology, ancient Simpsons episodes, and 90’s music. They’re also partial to baggy jeans, flannel shirts, and the move towards casual clothing that defined their adolescence.

As the affectionately named “sandwich generation,” Gen X is used to being forgotten and has never been thrust into the spotlight. They’re often content to live quiet lives and won’t crave praise for their achievements. Many people put this down to a generational “middle child syndrome,” as Gen Xers are sandwiched between Boomers and Millennials.
