25 Things You Should Probably Stop Doing After Age 50

Whenever you hit the big 5-0, you’ve also got to rethink your daily routines, as getting older means changing parts of your life to be healthier and more comfortable. Today, we’re looking at 25 things you might want to avoid after you turn 50 and why. You don’t have to completely stop doing them, but we’d recommend at least tweaking them to keep up with your body’s changes.

Skipping Regular Check-Ups

When you’re feeling okay, it’s easy to skip going to the doctor, but regular check-ups are pretty important for people over 50. They help catch issues early when they’re easier to manage and have a higher chance of being cured. Don’t wait for symptoms to show up before you make that appointment because regular screenings can literally be lifesavers.

Ignoring Sleep Schedule

Getting less sleep seems like it’s alright when you’re younger and working more. But when you get older, sticking to a regular sleep schedule helps support your overall health, and you should aim for around 7 to 8 hours every night. Hitting the pillow on time can help improve your memory and mood. And did we mention it helps you manage your weight, too?

Eating like you’re still 30 won’t cut it past 50 because your metabolism gets a lot slower. This means it’s far more important to focus on eating foods with lots of nutrients so you can stay healthy and energized. You should reduce the amount of processed foods you’re eating and increase the fresh produce, as it can make a big difference.

Going Too Hard in the Gym

Exercise is always important, but don’t push yourself too far. High-impact exercise can be harsher than you think on your aging joints, so think about doing more low-impact activities that’ll help you avoid the strain. Swimming or yoga can keep you toned, and you won’t feel the wear and tear.

After you turn 50, your skin needs more TLC, so moisturizing or wearing more sunscreen is a good idea. This helps you fight off premature aging, and it’ll also protect you from skin diseases. Don’t skimp, and you might also want to invest in a good hat for those sunny days out. It’s an easy move but with some pretty huge advantages.

Staying in the Sun Too Long

Similarly, while getting some sun is good, too much of it can increase your risk of skin cancer. As we’ve already said, you must wear sunscreen, but limiting how much exposure you get is also useful, so remember to get some shade and wear a hat. You can even try wearing some UV-blocking sunglasses to protect your eyes.

Staying Stressed

Long-term stress can take a serious toll on your heart and mind. Instead, try setting a few minutes aside each day to relax and clear your mind through meditation or other mindfulness techniques. Don’t underestimate the power of a good laugh or spending time with friends to fight that stress.

Skipping Breakfast

It may or may not be true that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but it’s still important. Skipping on it can cause you to put on weight and have less energy throughout the day, so go for a balanced breakfast to kickstart your metabolism. Thinking about rearranging your house? That’s fine, but make sure you leave lifting heavy items to the professionals because it can be pretty dangerous. If you’re determined to do it, make sure you research proper lifting techniques, or at least ask for some help, because you don’t want to risk the chance of an injury. And if it feels too heavy, it probably is.

Late-Night Eating

Eating late at night can disrupt both your sleep schedule and digestion, so try to have your last meal a few hours before bedtime. This way, you’ll help your body to wind down and process food better, which will keep it in rhythm. If you’re really hungry, it’s okay to have a light snack as long as you keep it healthy.

Smoking isn’t good for you at any age, but particularly when you’re older. Smoking can make any existing health problems worse, and it can massively decrease your life expectancy. Of course, that doesn’t mean quitting is easy, but it’s worth it, so try reaching out to your doctor for some support. You’ll feel the benefits almost immediately after you stop.
